Overview
Pelling is a small town in the northeastern Indian state of Sikkim, at the foothills of Mount Khangchendzonga. The late-17th-century Buddhist Sanga Choling Monastery has mountain views. Pemayangtse Monastery features wall paintings, sculptures and a gold-plated statue of Guru Padsambhava. Overlooking a valley, the 17th-century Rabdentse Palace, now in ruins, still has evidence of the king’s bedroom and kitchen.
The famous Pemayangste monastery is less than a kilometre from here and is a major tourist hotspot. Pelling also has sites for mountain biking, rock climbing, village tours, meditations, apart from serving as a base for a number of treks in the region.
Pelling is a hill station in Gyalshing district of Sikkim, India. Pelling is nestled at an altitude of 2,150 m (7,200 feet). The town is located at a distance of 10 km from Gyalshing city, the district headquarters and 131 km from Gangtok.
Considering typical tourist hill stations, Pelling would offer a close view of Kanchenjunga although Darjeeling too offers a nice view. Sandakphu to Phalut stretch is great for viewing both Kanchenjunga and Everest range. From Phalut, you can get the closest view of Kanchenjunga.
The nearest airport is at Bagdogra, 160 kilometres away. The airport is connected to all major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata by regular flights. From the Bagdogra Airport, hire a private cab or board a shared taxi (available from Siliguri) to reach Pelling.
