Overview
Bikaner is a city in the north Indian state of Rajasthan, east of the border with Pakistan. It’s surrounded by the Thar Desert. The city is known for the 16th-century Junagarh Fort, a huge complex of ornate buildings and halls. Within the fort, the Prachina Museum displays traditional textiles and royal portraits. Nearby, the Karni Mata Temple is home to many rats considered sacred by Hindu devotees.
One of the earlier established cities, Bikaner still displays its ancient opulence through palaces and forts, built of red sandstone, that have withstood the passage of time. The city boasts of some of the world’s best riding camels and is aptly nicknamed ‘camel country’.
The Rampuria Havelis are the most famous example of the genre. Built by 3 brothers who belonged to the wealthy Rampuria family, these 7 houses on the same streets are built with red-purplish dulmera stone.
Bikaner. It is one of the cities in Rajasthan that has maintained its low-key charm and has received the name Red City because of the Havelis that are made of red sandstone.
Bikaner Junction and Lalgarh Railway Station are located at a distance of 6 km from each other. These two stations connect Bikaner to major Indian cities such as Delhi, Punjab, Jodhpur, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Mumbai, Ahmedabad and Guwahati.
